Preliminary crime statistics released today from the Office of Justice Assistance show that violent crime increased just 0.5% statewide in 2007, and that state violent and property crime rates remain well below Midwest and national averages.
Homicide, which is the most infrequent of violent offenses, increased 11% in 2007. The source of the increase can likely be traced to the tragic shooting deaths in Crandon and a domestic incident which resulted in multiple homicides in Delavan.
Arrests for property offenses, which include burglary, theft, motor vehicle theft and arson, increased 3.6% in 2007, to a total of 41,225. Including arrests for violent crimes, lesser offenses and citations, Wisconsin law enforcement recorded 428,122 arrests in 2007, a 1.4% reduction from 2006.
